The Response of Modern Medicine
Since abdominal pain can result from a number of different sources, the first step is to identify its cause with a physical exam as well as a host of tests, including urine analysis, x-rays, ultrasounds and computed tomography (CT or CAT scan). A colonoscopy may also be done. If the pain results from an intestinal obstruction or a ruptured organ, emergency exploratory surgery would be performed.
The modern medical treatment approach to abdominal pain typically includes prescribing acid blockers, since it is often assumed that difficulties with digestion are involved with the condition. The problem with this approach is that long-term use of acid blockers can lead to other conditions like leaky gut syndrome, plus it does nothing to address the root cause of the abdominal pain. Interestingly enough, many modern doctors do not even consider food allergies or musculoskeletal issues as potential causes of abdominal pain.
The Natural Medicine Approach to Abdominal Pain
The natural medicine approach to abdominal pain also includes identifying the root of the problem, but it uses a different cadre of tests. Gluten (grain) and casein (dairy) allergies are checked using a food sensitivity panel and a blood test. If allergies are found, a diet that eliminates the allergens is prescribed. If the tests reveal that the individual is not producing enough stomach enzymes, which can be the case with abdominal pain, a good natural digestive enzyme such as DGST or Enzyme-Max is recommended.
A test for H-pylori bacteria in the stomach is also performed. If positive, antibiotics are prescribed, and specific nutrients such as Mastica, a resinous extract from the Pistacia lentiscus tree, traditionally used for a variety of ailments including disorders of the digestive tract, are also recommended. Candida, or a yeast infection, may also be a source of abdominal pain, as can parasites. Both are detected using CDSA, or a comprehensive digestive stool analysis, and treated appropriately.
If neither digestive nor bacterial causes appear to be at the root of the abdominal pain, musculoskeletal causes are considered next. A natural medicine doctor specializing in Prolotherapy would explore whether the abdominal pain might be due to a ligament injury or weakness in the area where the abdominal muscle attaches to the ribs or pubis. If this is the case, Prolotherapy to the area, as well as herbal supplements, is the best approach.
Chronic pain is most commonly due to tendon and ligament weakness or cartilage deterioration. The safest and most effective natural medicine treatment for repairing tendon, ligament and cartilage damage is Prolotherapy. In simple terms, Prolotherapy stimulates the body to repair painful areas. It does so by inducing a mild inflammatory reaction in the weakened ligaments and cartilage. Since the body heals by inflammation, Prolotherapy stimulates healing.
