The Response of Modern Medicine Ear and mouth pain is often associated with a variety of diagnoses, including otitis media, otitis externa, trigeminal neuralgia, atypical facial pain or temporomandibular joint syndrome. Treatment usually involves steroid and anti-inflammatory creams, drops and pills. The problem with this approach is that it does not do anything to strengthen the stylomandibular ligament and, thus, does not alleviate the chronic pain that people with this condition experience.
When all else fails, patients who experience chronic ear and mouth pain are usually referred to a surgeon. Unfortunately, surgery often makes the problem worse. Surgeons will use x-ray technology as a diagnostic tool, which does not always properly diagnose the pain source.
