Treatment of Scheuermann's Disease:

The Response of Modern Medicine
Scheuermann's diseaseTraditional modern medical treatment for Scheuermann’s disease usually involves a brace and physical therapy to deal with both the pain and the deformity that often results. Exercise has also been suggested to help relieve the pain, as has weight loss and the use of a rigid bed. Although these approaches may provide temporary relief, none of them addresses the underlying root of the problem and, thus, do not alleviate the chronic pain that people with this condition experience.
In extreme cases, such as for spinal curvatures of 60 degrees or greater, patients may be referred to a surgeon. At this point, surgery usually can only address the deformity and not the accompanying pain. And unfortunately, surgery often makes the problem worse. Surgeons will use x-ray technology as a diagnostic tool, which does not always properly diagnose the pain source. Decisions to remove cartilage tissue will most commonly result in arthritis.

The Natural Medicine Approach to Scheuermann’s Disease
A better approach is to strengthen the affected vertebral endplates, as well as the surrounding ligaments, with Prolotherapy, and to take herbal supplements. This usually cures not only the pain but also the condition. If the vertebral wedging has progressed to an advanced stage, Prolotherapy treatments will relieve the pain, but the deformity will continue. In the event that a deformity has developed that Prolotherapy cannot cure, kinesiotherapy, such as the CORE program, can be used to correct any muscoloskeletal abnormalities.

Prolotherapy treatment of the spineIn our opinion, a better approach is to strengthen the lumbar vertebral ligaments with Prolotherapy and prevent the progressive degeneration of the intervertebral discs that occurs with age. Chronic pain is most commonly due to tendon, cartilage and ligament damage or weakness, as is the case in degenerative disc disease. Diagnosis cannot be made by an X-ray, but must be made by taking a thorough history and poking the loose ligaments and looking for a positive "jump sign." The safest and most effective natural medicine treatment for repairing tendon, ligament and cartilage damage. In simple terms, Prolotherapy stimulates the body to repair painful areas. It does so by inducing a mild inflammatory reaction in the weakened ligaments and cartilage. Since the body heals by inflammation, Prolotherapy stimulates healing.

Prolotherapy is the only treatment found to stimulate cartilage repair and regeneration, as is shown by the X-rays at right of one of our patients.

Furthermore, Prolotherapy offers the most curative results in treating chronic pain. It effectively eliminates pain because it attacks the source: the weakened lumbar vertebral ligaments. What’s more, the tissue strengthening and pain relief stimulated by Prolotherapy is permanent!
