The Response of Modern Medicine
Exercise and rehabilitation usually follow a period of immobilization after an anterior dislocation, the most common type of shoulder dislocation. And especially if the dislocation occurs as the result of a sports injury, RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation) treatment is also a standard procedure. However, in the long run, these treatments do more damage than good. The RICE treatment actually hinders healing rather than promoting it by further decreasing the circulation to the damaged soft tissue of the shoulder dramatically. In other words, this approach does nothing to repair the weakened and injured ligaments in the shoulder and, thus, does not alleviate the chronic pain that people with this condition experience.
Another standard practice of modern medicine is to inject steroids into the injured joint or to prescribe anti-inflammatory medications. However, in the long run, these treatments do more damage than good. Although cortisone shots and anti-inflammatory drugs have been shown to produce short-term pain benefit, both result in long-term loss of function and even more chronic pain by actually inhibiting the healing process of soft tissues and accelerating cartilage degeneration. Plus, long-term use of these drugs can lead to other sources of chronic pain, allergies and leaky gut syndrome.
When all else fails and strength and stability are not restored to the shoulder, patients who have experienced a shoulder dislocation are usually referred to a surgeon. Unfortunately, surgery often makes the problem worse. While surgery can treat anterior dislocations effectively in many cases, post-operative pain, a lengthy rehabilitation and a chance of not returning to the previous levels of athletic activity is to be expected. In addition, surgeons will use x-ray technology as a diagnostic tool, which does not always properly diagnose the pain source. Decisions to remove cartilage tissue will most commonly result in arthritis.
The Natural Medicine Approach to a Shoulder Dislocation Since we believe an initial shoulder dislocation, and most likely recurring shoulder dislocations, are often the result of ligament injury of the shoulder, a better approach is to stimulate ligament repair with Prolotherapy. Prolotherapy injections directed at the anterior shoulder capsule and the insertions of the middle and inferior glenohumeral ligaments will increase joint strength and allow pain-free motion through a wide range of shoulder movement. In addition, unlike surgery, Prolotherapy involves no cutting, no suturing, no sewing and no stapling.
Chronic pain is most commonly due to tendon and ligament weakness, as is often the case with a shoulder dislocation, or cartilage deterioration. The safest and most effective natural medicine treatment for repairing tendon, ligament and cartilage damage is Prolotherapy. In simple terms, Prolotherapy stimulates the body to repair painful areas. It does so by inducing a mild inflammatory reaction in the weakened ligaments and cartilage. Since the body heals by inflammation, Prolotherapy stimulates healing.
Prolotherapy offers the most curative results in treating chronic pain. It effectively eliminates pain because it attacks the source: the fibro-osseous junction, an area rich in sensory nerves. What’s more, the tissue strengthening and pain relief stimulated by Prolotherapy is permanent!
