The Response of Modern Medicine
Since spastic torticollis involves painful muscle spasms that force the neck into a backward, forward or sideways position, modern medical treatment involves neck braces, physical therapy and muscle relaxants. While any of these measures may result in temporary pain relief, they do nothing to repair the weakened ligaments that are quite likely at the root of the problem and, thus, do not alleviate the chronic pain that people with this condition experience. In addition, long-term use of muscle relaxants can lead to unpleasant side effects.
At one time, surgery to cut the tight muscles in the neck was the standard mode of treatment. The latest treatment involves injecting botulism toxin into the tight muscles, which paralyzes them and allows the head to straighten for a period of time. Again, although this may provide temporary pain relief, it does not get at the root of the problem – loose ligaments, which are due either to an injury or another cause.
The Natural Medicine Approach to Spastic Torticollis
A better approach is to strengthen the loose ligaments in the neck with Prolotherapy and, if a significant shortening of the neck muscles has already occurred, to supplement the Prolotherapy treatments with botulism toxin injections. Once a ligament is loose, as occurs in a neck injury, the overlying muscles must tighten to support the structure, and if the ligaments on only one side of the neck are loose, muscles on that side will spasm, resulting in spastic torticollis. When strengthened with Prolotherapy, the weakened ligaments of the neck will cause the muscle spasms to cease and allow the neck to regain its full range of motion.
Chronic pain is most commonly due to tendon weakness, ligament weakness, as is the case with spastic torticollis, or cartilage deterioration. The safest and most effective natural medicine treatment for repairing tendon, ligament and cartilage damage is Prolotherapy. In simple terms, Prolotherapy stimulates the body to repair painful areas. It does so by inducing a mild inflammatory reaction in the weakened ligaments and cartilage. Since the body heals by inflammation, Prolotherapy stimulates healing.
Prolotherapy offers the most curative results in treating chronic pain. It effectively eliminates pain because it attacks the source: the fibro-osseous junction, an area rich in sensory nerves. What’s more, the tissue strengthening and pain relief stimulated by Prolotherapy is permanent!
Caring Medical is a full time Prolotherapy doctor’s office. We have successfully treated all of the conditions we write about. This is why patients travel from across the country and internationally to be treated by our Prolotherapy physician Dr. Ross Hauser. The difference is in the care, technique, and experience you get with Dr. Hauser and team at Caring Medical.
The treatment regimens suggested here are based on the experience of Caring Medical. They do not apply to every case or condition. A person using these recommendations without the aid of a personal physician does so at their own risk.
