CONDITION: Churg-Strauss Syndrome

DESCRIPTION:
Churg-Strauss syndrome is a specific form of the autoimmune disease known as vasculitis, which involves inflammation of the blood vessels. Churg-Strauss syndrome is characterized by the formation and accumulation of an abnormally large number of certain white blood cells, inflammation of blood vessels and inflammatory nodular lesions. Onset typically occurs from 15 to 70 years of age, and the disease affects both males and females.
How does Churg-Strauss syndrome develop?
The cause of Churg-Strauss syndrome is unknown. It is clear, however, that the immune system plays a critical role in the tissue damage caused by the disease. In Churg-Strauss syndrome the immune system produces antibodies that attack the body, causing inflammation to develop in the blood vessels. Inflammation in blood vessel and artery walls leads to narrowing of the vessels. The blood vessels become leaky or clogged, disrupting blood flow to nerves, organs and other parts of the body. Inadequate blood supply to a particular tissue or organ can result in permanent damage such as loss of pulse points, blindness and pulmonary failure. Any organ or combination of organs in the body can be affected.
What are the symptoms of Churg-Strauss syndrome?
Asthma is one of the cardinal features of Churg-Strauss syndrome. Asthma symptoms may begin long before the onset of vasculitis. Other early signs of the disease include nasal polyps, allergies and an excessive number of white blood cells in the body. Other initial symptoms may include fever and weight loss. As the disease progresses, patients complain of loss of appetite, general fatigue and weakness, rash and skin lesions. Purpura (hemorrhages into the skin or nodules) is the most common non-pulmonary symptom in two-thirds of patients, as well as migrating joint and muscle pain.
Conventional medical treatments may help relieve the symptoms of Churg-Strauss syndrome but they do not address the root of the problem. Generally, by undergoing comprehensive natural medicine testing, the reasons the body is producing antibodies against itself can be found. Some of these reasons include sensitivities or allergies to foods, inhalants and chemicals and various infections.
