CONDITION: Estrogen Excess

DESCRIPTION:
Estrogen is one of several hormones involved in the growth and maintenance of the female reproductive system. It is present in the body in one of three forms – estradiol, estrone and estriol. Estradiol is by far the most potent of the three and the form typically referred to in the case of estrogen excess.

How does estrogen excess develop?
Estrogen excess can be due to a number of different causes, including an intrinsic hormonal imbalance. However, the largest causes of estrogen excess are oral contraceptives and post-menopausal hormone replacement therapy (HRT). In addition, estrogen excess can also be due to adrenal insufficiency with ovarian overcompensation; liver overload preventing estrogen breakdown; parasympathetic dominance; the affect of excess fat or fiber intake on enterohepatic circulation; and excess coffee, tea, chocolate or vitamin E.

What are the symptoms of estrogen excess?
Estrogen excess has many physiological and biological effects. These effects can cause women to suffer from acne and various skin lesions, constipation, allergies, moodiness, irritability, depression, water retention, chronic musculoskeletal aching and severe PMS. In turn, many of these are symptoms of conditions such as dysmenorrhea, PMS, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, fibrocystic breast disease, migraine headaches and chronic pelvic pain.

Conventional medical treatments may help relieve the symptoms of estrogen excess, but they do not address the root of the problem. Discover why we believe that natural medicine treatments are the best way to treat estrogen excess.
