DESCRIPTION:
Joint pain, also known as arthralgia, can affect one or more joints. Joints are the point at which two bones come together in either a rigid, but more typically a movable way. They are connected by membranes, tendons and ligaments, and cushioned by cartilage. While all joints play an important role in our bodies, some do more work than others and are thus more susceptible to injury and overuse. The joints of the arms and legs appear to be the most commonly affected. Most people will experience a painful joint at some point in their lives.
How does joint pain develop?
Joint pain can be caused by any number of conditions or injuries, such as rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune disease that also involves stiffness of the joints. Osteoarthritis is another cause. It involves painful bone spurs and cartilage degeneration in a joint, and typically affects adults 45 years and older. Other common causes of joint pain include excessive exertion or overuse, which can lead to painful strains or sprains; injuries; gout, which typically affects the big toe; tendonitis; bursitis; infectious diseases such as measles and mumps; chondromalacia patellae; and osteomyelitis. Loose or injured ligaments play a role in many of these causes.
What are the symptoms of joint pain?
No matter what the cause, joint pain can be quite bothersome. The intensity of the pain as well as its duration is variable, and may increase with use of the affected joint. Weakness, numbness, tingling, sleeping difficulties, lack of energy and depression may accompany the pain. If the pain lasts for more than six months, it is considered chronic.
Conventional medical treatments may help relieve the symptoms of joint pain, but they do not address the root of the problem. By strengthening structural weaknesses in the body, as natural medicine treatments like Prolotherapy do, joint pain may be alleviated permanently.
