DESCRIPTION:
Thank you for your interest in the Natural Medicine approach to treating disease and healthy living! Caring Medical is currently a full time Prolotherapy doctor's office, headed by Ross Hauser, MD and we are blessed to fill the needs of patients seeking an alternative to surgery. We are accepting new patients and athletes suffering from chronic pain, sports injuries, and arthritis for treatment with Prolotherapy. Due to this large demand in Prolotherapy, we are not currently accepting new patients for natural medicine conditions, this includes autoimmune conditions, weight loss, menopause, hormones, or cancer. Through the years, we have seen so many lives turn around for the better with some of the methods discussed on this page, and encourage you to seek a Natural Medicine practitioner at www.acam.org.
Pernicious Anemia is an autoimmune condition that results in a deficiency of vitamin B12, which is needed for normal production of red blood cells. This relatively rare condition occurs typically in people over age 50.
How does pernicious anemia develop?
Pernicious anemia results from the failure of the digestive tract to absorb vitamin B12. This is due to insufficient amounts of the protein called intrinsic factor, which is secreted by parietal cells that line part of the stomach. Normally, after being ingested, B12 binds with intrinsic factor to be absorbed into the blood stream. Without intrinsic factor, vitamin B12 remains in the intestine and is excreted into the stool. In pernicious anemia, the immune system produces autoantibodies that inhibit the parietal cells from secreting intrinsic factor. As a result, vitamin B12 isn't absorbed and anemia develops even if large amounts of the vitamin, or food containing the vitamin, are consumed.
Some other possible causes of this condition include a bacterial growth in the small intestine, which would prevent vitamin B12 absorption, Crohn's disease or the surgical removal of portions of the stomach and small intestine where the parietal cells reside.
What are the symptoms of pernicious anemia?
In most cases, symptoms of pernicious anemia won’t develop for several years after the body stops absorbing vitamin B12—until the nervous system is affected and the production of red blood cells significantly decreases. At this point, symptoms could include tingling sensations in the hand and feet; a lack of feeling in the legs, hands and feet as well as spastic movements; color blindness involving yellow and blue; a burning or sore tongue; darkened skin; weight loss; depression, confusion or a decrease in intellectual function.
Conventional medical treatments may help relieve the symptoms of pernicious anemia but they do not address the root of the problem. Generally, by undergoing comprehensive natural medicine testing, the reasons the body is producing antibodies against itself can be found. Some of these reasons include sensitivities or allergies to foods, inhalants and chemicals and various infections.
