DESCRIPTION:
Snapping hip syndrome is a condition characterized by a snapping sensation, and often an audible popping noise, when the hip is flexed and extended. The syndrome occurs most often among individuals 15 to 40 years old, and affects females slightly more often than males. In one clinic, the rate of some form of snapping hip syndrome among female ballet dancers with hip complaints was close to 50 percent, and approximately 30 percent noted pain with this condition.
How does snapping hip syndrome develop?
Snapping hip syndrome has three primary causes. The most common cause involves the iliotibial band, or IT band, which is a thick, wide tendon that runs over the outside of the hip joint. Snapping hip syndrome occurs when the iliotibial band snaps over the bony prominence over the outside of the hip joint. Patients with this type of snapping hip syndrome may also develop trochanteric bursitis from the irritation of the bursa in this region. The second cause for snapping hip syndrome is the iliopsoas tendon, which can catch on a bony prominence of the pelvis and cause a snap when the hip is flexed. When the iliopsoas tendon is the cause of snapping hip syndrome, patients typically experience no problems other than the annoying snapping. Finally, the third and least likely cause of snapping hip syndrome involves a tear in the hip cartilage or bone debris in the hip joint. This type of snapping hip usually causes pain and may be disabling. In addition, a loose piece of cartilage can cause the hip to catch or lock up.
What are the symptoms of snapping hip syndrome?
The obvious symptom of snapping hip syndrome is a popping sensation and often audible popping sound when walking or extending the leg. Snapping hip syndrome usually produces little discomfort, and pain occurs in only one out of three sufferers. For many afflicted individuals, annoyance is the biggest complaint. If a patient develops trochanteric bursitis from snapping hip syndrome, they will develop increased pain, especially when lying on the affected side.
Conventional medical treatments may help relieve the symptoms of snapping hip syndrome, but they do not address the root of the problem. By strengthening structural weaknesses in the body, as natural medicine treatments like Prolotherapy do, snapping hip syndrome may be alleviated permanently.
