10 common mistakes people make when it comes to “eating healthy”
Here are 10 common mistakes people make when it comes to “eating healthy”: My solutions to these mistakes are listed in italics!
1. Getting your nutrition information from the latest women’s magazine. Please consider the source when reading about health and nutrition. What you hear/read in the media is not always the whole truth. We believe in an individualized approach to nutrition.
2. Assuming that the diet your friend tried will work for you. The Hauser Diet plan is based on the results of your blood tests. You can know for sure how to eat – for YOU!
3. Assuming that your diet is “pretty healthy.” Most people assume that they are eating “pretty healthy” – but they may be making food choices that, in actuality, are not that healthy. For example, choosing fruit juice or tea instead of soda. Some of these juices and teas contain the same or even more sugar than soda. Water is always the best choice. Or eating a lot of fruit – most people do not need a lot of fruit and should be concentrating more on eating more vegetables!
4. Eating too much food. Plain and simple: most of us eat too much food. We eat past the point of just feeling full. We eat to the point of being stuffed. This has become our habit. We don’t know when to stop. Our advice: purchase smaller plates to help curb the amount of food you eat. Don’t go back for seconds, and thirds. Listen to your body.
5. Eating at the wrong times. I can’t tell you the number of people who feel that they are “healthy” because they only eat one meal per day. Our bodies are not designed to function efficiently by only fueling it once per day. This is actually a very unhealthy thing to do. Chapter 2 of The Hauser Diet book explains why different Diet Types may even need to eat more frequently than 3 meals per day – maybe even 5-6 times per day because they are fast oxidizers of food.
6. Avoiding exercise like the plague. Let’s face it. We all need to exercise – especially as we age – and that includes all of us. When we say exercise, we do not mean 5 minutes on the treadmill. We mean sustained exercise for at least 30 minutes at a level where you get your heart rate up! Make your life an active life. Walk to work. Bike to the store. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. You need to strengthen your bones, muscles and joints. Exercise will help you do this! Not only that, exercise will stimulate your metabolism. Some people’s metabolisms are so slow that they can never lose weight. Chapter 10 of the Hauser Diet book will help you get started on an exercise program you can do right in your own home with minimal cost.
7. Having nothing but condiments in your refrigerator. Okay – let’s get real here. You need to be eating real food. This means that you need to start cooking. Chapter 9 of the Hauser Diet book contains a multitude of recipes that help you learn how you can make cooking fun, easy, and healthy – for each one of the five Hauser Diet Types.
8. Knowing the take out menus of your local restaurants better than the grocery store aisles. It continues to amaze me at how frequently some people eat out each week. Not only for dinner, but often for breakfast and lunch too. Eating out can not only become expensive, but you tend to eat things that you should not be eating OR you eat too much. Cooking in your own home starts with shopping in the grocery store! You can even shop online for groceries, so there really is no excuse!
9. Cooking is equal to opening a box or can and heating it in the microwave. This ties into #7, but there really is no excuse for eating like this. Foods that are supposedly “good for you” that come premade in a box and are heated in a microwave are NOT good for you. Most are devoid of nutrients and loaded with chemicals. Dump the microwave. Learn to cook in a pan on top of the stove or in the oven. Use REAL FOOD.
10. Choosing “fake foods” to stay “healthier.” Foods such as “fat free” ice cream and “sugar free” candy or “low carb bread” are non foods. The food industry has allowed chemicals to be substituted for nutrients in these food products. These are not healthier than real food.
If you are feeling confused about what you should eat or think that you are eating “healthy” but now you’re not really sure, give us a call and set up a consultation today. Never underestimate the power of food!
Remember: If you eat great, chances are you’ll feel great! Never underestimate the power of food!
