A patient, a 64 year-old-woman, came to Caring Medical with complaints of chronic fatigue syndrome, which she had struggled with for many years. She was an omnivore (mixed diet) her entire life until she watched the movie “The Animals Film.” The film was so moving that she decided to stop eating all animal products, except fish and dairy. She began this process at age 52.

This vegetarian type diet makes blood more acidic (low pH), where a higher protein diet will make the blood more alkaline (high pH). At this time she was living in North Carolina, a warmer climate which makes blood more alkaline. She did well on this vegetarian type diet and was feeling good emotionally and physically about her food choices.

At age 58, she moved to Chicago, a colder climate - which makes blood more acidic. She stayed on the same diet she followed in North Carolina. Her chronic fatigue returned with a vengeance. Paired with being a stranger in a new town, the patient was terribly depressed. She had to cut her work schedule from five days per week to three days per week and would spend all time away from work on her couch.

She thought that increasing her protein intake would make a difference. She tried to increase her intake of fish, tofu, and cheese, but it did not help her condition. Eventually she abandoned her previous diet for a high protein/low carb diet, which makes the blood more alkaline. She started to notice that her body was craving meat and that she was having a change for the better in her energy level.

The patient received diet typing and food allergy testing at Caring Medical. Her tests revealed that she was a fast oxidizer with acidic blood pH. The high protein/low carbohydrate diet (or Hauser Diet #1) was the ideal diet for her. We explained that her blood pH was naturally acidic. If she lives in a colder climate which acidifies the blood, she needs to eat foods to alkalinize the blood in order to keep within pH balance. She understood, but like most people who start this high protein/high fat diet they worry about cholesterol levels. She was pleasantly surprised to see that her LDL and triglycerides actually normalized on the high protein/high fat diet versus being elevated on her previous vegetarian diet.

Since changing her diet, the patient has been able to increase her activity level beyond anything she had been able to do since she moved to Chicago. She has started an exercise program, including swimming. Natural medicine testing and the continual raise in energy level has made this patient a believer in eating right for her diet type.
