Healthy on the outside, but not on the inside. A look at pH.
Healthy on the outside
"Is there any way you can check my blood pH?" AB asked. "I was just wondering because my naturopath back in New York was checking my salivary pH, and I'd like to compare them." Interesting question we get, because salivary pH and blood pH are definitely NOT the same!
AB was not a patient of ours, but was here with her husband, who had begun receiving Prolotherapy, and who was in our lab that day having Diet Typing performed. We spoke with AB further while she was waiting with her husband outside of the lab, to find out a little more about her request. She said she has been healthy all of her life, and she would like to be proactive about remaining healthy. At 62 years of age, AB is full of energy. She is not overweight and rates her total health at 95%. She was also hoping to have Diet Typing to find out if she was the same Type as her husband, which she thought would benefit her cooking plans.
Current diet
So, we started things rolling, and put AB on the schedule to see Dr. Ross Hauser, and scheduled her for the lab as well for Diet Typing. AB prefers a more vegetarian diet, but was not opposed to eating meat. Her diet consisted of vegetables, proteins, some fats in the form of nuts, and fruit with every meal and snack. At a glance, her diet might look very healthy, except for possibly that nightly ice cream snack. However, for AB and for many other people who think they are doing a great job on their diet, the intake of fruit was way too high! Unfortunately many of our patients equate the healthiness of fruit with the healthiness of vegetables. We do not agree with this. People need to eat MANY MORE vegetables!
What did the results look like?
We checked AB's blood glucose four times, once every thirty minutes. All four glucose results were much higher than the normal expected values. Not even one of the glucose readings was normal. We also checked her fasting and one hour insulin. Fasting insulin was normal, but the one hour insulin was starting to creep up, signifying some insulin resistance. Her glycosylated hemoglobin was elevated, demonstrating that she maintains abnormally high glucose levels on a daily basis.
Elevated glucose levels and disease
Maintaining an elevated glucose level is a huge threat to people's lives and health!
These high glucose levels lead to the production of increased insulin, which we have already seen beginning to occur with AB. This is due to excessive carbohydrate intake, and in her case, largely from the consumption of fruit products. This condition can lead to Metabolic Syndrome which is known to include high blood pressure, elevated blood sugar, high cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and increased abdominal fatness. When associated together, these may greatly increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and type II diabetes. Recent medical literature is also tying high glycemic carbohydrate intake and cancer.
If AB were to continue eating the same foods, she would soon be diabetic. She, however, is intent on changing her diet to avoid the health hazards she could potentially face. She can successfully manage and even reverse the process by an appropriate diet. We recommended the Otter Diet for AB, which will include increasing her protein intake and limiting her fruit intake. She definitely needed to eat more meat, fish, and poultry!
What began as a question of curiosity to find out a pH level, (normal by the way), ended up resulting in an answer which could help AB avoid life altering diseases. She also received the answer to her other question…What diet was her husband going to follow?
Yes, he ended up being an Otter as well! The recommended diets will help AB avoid diabetes, and will help her husband heal as he proceeds with his Prolotherapy treatments.
