Perineum, Groin, and Even the Bladder Are Painful
Ross Hauser, M.D.
A patient was referred to Caring Medical in Oak Park, Illinois from another physician. She had a long history of Interstitial cystitis. She had been to numerous doctors with little help. The bladder pain was ruining her life. On her first visit she received Prolotherapy to her pubic symphysis and Neural Therapy to her pelvic sympathetic ganglion. She came back one month later and was 80% improved. She received the same treatment then and was discharged from the practice. When she saw the referring physician in Tennessee one month later she was completely pain free. This wonderful story has been repeated numerous times at Caring Medical, though most folks need more than two visits.
How did pubic symphysis, Prolotherapy, and Neural Therapy to the pelvic sympathetic ganglion help this person?
The answer lies in the fact that when the pubic symphysis is injured it can affect the sympathetic nerves that go to the female organs and bladder. Likewise sometimes the sympathetic or adrenaline nerves that go to the female organs and bladder can continue to fire even after the initial insult is resolved. For example, let's say a person gets a urinary tract infection. That urinary tract infection causes the sympathetic nerves to the bladder to fire so the person feels a burning sensation while they urinate. This is needed so they will go to the doctor for an antibiotic. Sometimes even after the antibiotic has killed the bacteria the sympathetic nerves continue to fire. The way to turn them off is Neural Therapy to those nerves. Usually three to six visits of Neural Therapy are needed to accomplish this.
The autonomic nervous system is that part of the nervous system not under a person's voluntary control. For instance when I hold my wife's hand I know her heart starts palpitating. This is not under her voluntary control (well it used to). When a person goes outside in the dark the pupils dilate automatically. Part of the autonomic nervous system is the sympathic nervous system. One of the neurotransmitters of this system is adrenaline. When a person has a burning type pain, like in interstitial cystitis, one has to think of injury or firing of the sympathetic nervous system. It is in these cases that Neural Therapy is done. Neural Therapy involves the injection of Procaine into these nerves. This turns off the sympathetic nervous system for a couple of hours. The system eventually resets itself and starts functioning normally, as happened to Sara.
When their is pubic symphysis injury, or a gynecological surgery or a person has a history of gynecological or bladder problems, one should think of autonomic nervous system dysfunction. When this is involved Neural Therapy to the pelvic sympathetic nervous should be given. For a structural problem such as pubic symphysis injury, then Prolotherapy to the pubic symphysis is needed. The same autonomic nerves that go the pubis, also innervate some of the gynecological structures and bladder. This is why if a person is tender in their pubis to palpation, Prolotherapy should be done to the pubis symphysis.
The case above is not an isolated one. There are thousands upon thousands of people suffering from severe perineal, groin, and gynecological/bladder pain. In these cases it is the opinion of this author that an evaluation by a Prolotherapist be done. The solution may be as simple as a few shots to the pubic symphysis and into and around the pelvic sympathetic nerves. This surely beats a lifetime of pain.
