Seven ways to brighten up your breakfast! Bookmark and Share

< Back Make an Appointment

Many people find themselves rushed in the morning and feel that they don't have time for a good breakfast. As with anything that is worth something, doing a little pre-planning can help make breakfast time run a little more smoothly.Long term your body will thank you because you won't end up with as many degenerative diseases if you take care of it now!

We don't know about you, but we also like variety and try to mix things up a bit. However, others prefer to eat the same thing for breakfast and have been doing that for years. In order to optimize your nutritional intake and make breakfast a part of a healthy diet plan, we recommend eating a variety of foods in order to maximize your nutrient intake.

5 Benefits of Eating Breakfast

1. more energy

2. "breaks" the fast – hence improves metabolism

3. clear thinking

4. keeps things moving (bowels)

5. enjoyable – what food isn't? :)

Seven ways to brighten your breakfast:

1. Grains, grains, grains! Do you love eating cereal for breakfast? If you are a carb-based Hauser Bear, Monkey, or Giraffe, you need grains – we are not talking Cheerios, Captain Crunch, or Fruit Loops.Try organic steel-cut oatmeal, quinoa flakes, cornmeal (polenta) for some tasty hot cereal choices. Or choose a higher fiber cold cereal such as organic Kashi, Raisin Bran, or Heritage Multi grain cereals. For those of you who follow gluten-free diets, our personal favorites come from Sami's Bakery (lavash (tortillas), bagels, and bread) – high in fiber, gluten-free and very tasty! (www.samisbakery.com).

2. Got Milk? Many of our patients are casein (dairy) sensitive, so they are looking for a good-tasting, nutrient dense milk substitute. Try unsweetened (be sure to check!), organic soy, hemp, or coconut milk. Even for those without sensitivities, we find these to be very healthy choices. Rice and almond milk do not contain as much protein. Watch the sugar content of your milk, as many brands are now encouraging flavored milks – yes, they taste good, but do you need those extra calories? Organic cow's milk is good for those who can tolerate it. Low fat varieties for the Hauser Diet Types that need it (Monkey and Giraffes), where Lions and Otters can have whole milk.

3. Tutie Fruity? Although many of us grew up with a daily glass of OJ, we recommend eating the whole fruit instead of drinking it. This will provide you with more fiber. Again, carb-based diets, such as the Bear, Monkey, and Giraffe diets, do well with fruits, but you Otters and Lions should be avoiding fruits for breakfast unless you want to find your face on the desk at 10AM. Add a little variety and eat seasonally – apples, pears, blueberries, strawberries, banana, oranges, or figs.

4. Where's the beef? Many of us love a good bacon and egg breakfast – can't you smell it sizzling now? For those Diet Types with protein-based physiology, you need this type of breakfast in order to keep you going through the morning. Carb-based diets such as the Bear, Monkey, Giraffe Diets need to use proteins moderately. Contrary to popular belief, eggs do not raise your cholesterol – they are a great source of protein. Hard or soft-boiled, poached, over-easy, or made into a breakfast casserole – they're all good. Not only are they a great protein source, but they contain only 70 calories per egg. That's a lot of nutrient bang for your buck! Other great sources of breakfast protein include organic sausages, leftover meat from dinner such as chicken, beef, or pork, as well as nitrate free bacon, Canadian bacon, and ham.

5. Cup o' Joe: Who doesn't love the aroma of fresh coffee brewing? I have to admit, I have become a coffee snob. I love fresh ground, dark roast, strong coffee – especially espresso or cappuccino (made at home, of course). Moderation is key with coffee. Those Diet Types with acid blood pH (typically Lions, sometimes Otters) should really be avoiding coffee or limiting it to one cup per day.We strongly recommend organic coffee to avoid added chemicals and processing.  Heating some milk (soy, coconut, hemp – whatever kind you are drinking) and mixing it with your coffee can make a tasty, healthy treat and save you $6 at the coffee shop!  Dump the sweetened chemical-laden coffee creamers. Believe me, we like the taste of them too, but they are not good for you. Stick with plain milk and even a little added raw sugar/honey. A splash of cocoa, cinnamon, or vanilla extract can easily spice things up even more if you have them on hand.  We have an espresso machine and a frother at home and they have certainly paid for themselves already!

6. Veggie fever! I have it – and wish everyone else had it as well! Never underestimate veggies for breakfast! For those of you who have read my posts in the past, you know that I always have veggies on hand and add them everywhere I can because they provide great taste, color, nutrients, and make things alot more interesting. A little goes a long way – just a few cherry tomatoes and some basil added to your hot cereal is tasty – drizzle with some olive oil – whallah! Saute chopped veggies or fresh spinach in a skillet (whatever you have on hand) and top with a couple of eggs. Delish! Make a breakfast sandwich with a whole grain English muffin, sliced tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, avocado with a poached egg atop! The options are endless.  This is a great way to get

7. Fat for breakfast? I would venture to say that most people feel that there is no shortage of fat in most breakfasts. For those of you "fat-phobes" out there, just remember that fat is required for many bodily functions, including hormone production, good skin, and hair. All Diet Types need good fats, but Hauser Lion and Otters particularly need it. Breakfast is a great way to add good fats. Drizzle your hot cereal with extra virgin cold pressed olive oil. Spread an English muffin with avocado or just eat slices. Have a couple of olives or nuts. Sprinkle some flax seeds on whatever you are eating. Try some organic nut butters (cashew, almond, peanut, soynut) not only as a spread, but mixed in your eggs or on a slice of meat (for Otters and Lions). Why not have hummus? Use this as a spread or side for breakfast – it's not just for other meals.

These suggestions are only a few that we have up our sleeves! We invite you to think outside the box when it comes to breakfast…because you are what you eat! And you should never underestimate the power of food for your health and healing ability with Prolotherapy and with other degenerative diseases.
