The cold weather is officially here and many of you are hoping to keep the winter weight gain to a minimum. Most people blame weight gain around this time of year on lack of exercise and increase in hibernation from the cold. That may be partly true, but the Hauser Diet has a theory of it’s own that holds true each year. As always, you have to eat right for your diet type!

Did you know that the cold weather can affect your blood pH? (See Blood pH Really Does Matter!) The colder the temperatures go, the more likely your blood pH is going to lower, or become more acidic. What happens when you blood pH becomes more acidic? (See What Does It Mean To Have Acidic Blood?) The pH-sensitive enzymes that run your metabolism slow down, they can’t work efficiently when they are not in the proper pH environment. So how do you counteract the acidifying effects of cold weather? Through diet! Higher protein meals like chicken, beef, turkey, etc. (with vegetables, of course) will raise your blood pH and bring it into balance. But what are the common foods eaten this time of year? Hot chocolate, apple cider, holiday sweets, etc – all simple carbohydrates that acidify your blood! A lot of people are eating the wrong food during this time of year and the food plus the weather equals an unbalanced blood pH, which means a slower metabolism.

So for those of you who are Otters and Lions, it is especially important for you to stick with your diet type through these colder months. You tend to be more acidic so you have to watch what you eat. But of course there is no one diet for everyone. Some people, specifically Giraffes and Monkeys, may feel great in the winter – their blood pH tends to be high, or alkaline, so the cold weather will actually help balance their blood pH and make them feel better. They just need to be sure to eat complex carbohydrates and avoid the simple ones.

You have to eat right for your diet type, especially when the seasons start to change. Some of our patients even come back to see us to get their blood pH re-checked. There may be a few diet changes that need to be made in the wintertime, and we are here to help you figure that out.

Do you know what your Diet Type is? If not, let us help you figure it out. If you are looking to avoid weight gain this winter, then Diet Typing should be the first step for you. Give us a call to set up your appointment and get started before the weather gets too cold!
