shows exercise better...there's more to the story...
I came across this article in YAHOO news today that said, "Training and ergonomic advices are more effective than anti-inflammatory drugs and cortisone injections in treating tennis elbow, and give fewer side effects. This is the conclusion of a thesis presented at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden."
Interesting comments from the researchers, "It became clear that treatment with medication has side effects in many cases. Most side effects were reported from just those treatments that are often the treatment of choice for tennis elbow by GPs, which are cortisone injections and anti-inflammatory drugs", says Pia Nilsson, physiotherapist and scientist at the Sahlgrenska Academy.
The article goes on to talk about how they found exercise and proper ergonomics to be better than the traditional RICE-type treatments doctors frequently give. Imagine that?!
To take it one step further - what can we do to cure the underlying cause of the tennis elbow? Yes, you know the answer - stimulate the body to repair the injured ligament and tendons with Prolotherapy. Although we agree that exercise and proper ergonomics is better than NSAIDs and cortisone shots, we wish the article went further to discover a method for actually reversing the condition and completely eliminating the pain. Dr. Hauser will fully examine the patient and also determine if the elbow pain is due to the actual ligaments in the elbow itself or due to a referred pain from the shoulder or neck.
