Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is another form of Prolotherapy
We receive many phone calls and emails about PRP because of its recent surge in the news due to some famous athletes receiving PRP treatments for their injuries. Platelet rich plasma is a process where you draw a patient's own blood, process it and extract the growth factors to be used as the proliferant in the Prolotherapy treatment itself. In other words, PRP IS a form of proliferative injection therapy or Prolotherapy. When we perform PRP on a patient, it is typically to use a stronger solution than the traditional solution or in cases of severe arthritis and/or ligament/tendon tears. Each case is treated on an individual basis and the need assessed.
When performing PRP to an area, we also treat the entire area as we normally would treat it using the normal Prolotherapy solution in addition to the PRP. So a patient would still end up getting a significant amount of injections for his/her injury, not just one injection. We find that using the Hackett-Hemwall method of Prolotherapy is best - ie treating the entire area with multiple injections every 4 to 6 weeks produces the greatest results.
At Caring Medical we see many pain patients every day, all day long - and they come here from all over the world. Traditional Prolotherapy, without PRP, works exceedingly well in our office using the techniques that we use - ie we have a 95% effectiveness rate overall. PRP is typically reserved for certain cases such as those mentioned above. When traditional Prolotherapy is so successful, we do not feel the need to add additional expense to the treatment when it may not be necessary. Some patients start out right away with PRP such as the case of a hip or shoulder labral tear. But it is not necessary for all Prolotherapy treatments. However having done PRP for a number of years, we do find that it is highly successful for those select cases.
