Prolotherapy, an alternative to cortisone shots
Question from a recent emailer:
"I received a cortisone injection for my knee pain about a week ago. After I received it, I started looking online about injections for knee pain. I came across your website and found out about Prolotherapy. It seems like I should not have gotten the cortisone shot. Plus I still have the pain - as the pain relief only lasted about 3 days. How long do I have to wait before getting Prolotherapy?"
Caring Medical commentary: We can't tell you how frequently we receive an email message like this one - at least a couple times per week, plus we see patients in the clinic who state the same thing. They just don't realize that harm that cortisone does to the body. When they hear that cortisone actually furthers the degenerative process they feel really dumb for having agreed to get a cortisone shot. However, to their defense, half the time, the doctor administering the shot does not even tell the patient what he/she is doing/giving. So it's too late. People are starting to wake up and smell the coffee and are not happy with this type of care. So they are searching out alternative to cortisone shots, alternatives to long term NSAID prescriptions, and certainly looking for alternatives to arthroscopy and joint replacement surgery. Thank goodness many are finding Prolotherapy!
