Recent email from a patient regarding SLAP lesion in the shoulder:
Dr. Hauser,
My searches for alternatives to surgery to repair a SLAP lesion in my left shoulder have consistently lead to your name. My SLAP lesion has been detected through MRI. In your opinion, is X-ray needle guidance required to achieve good results for treatment? When will Prolotherapy not work for such a treatment? Thanks for your time.
Regards,
- J
Dear J,
It isn’t really whether or not Prolotherapy will work for the SLAP lesion; it really relates more to you and the amount of time between Prolotherapy treatments. In other words if you are serious about getting better with Prolotherapy for a SLAP lesion, then you need to seriously limit the use of your shoulder while you are getting Prolotherapy. In other words, kind of follow the same protocol you would if a surgeon repaired it. We would be very aggressive with the Prolotherapy, which means using a strong solutions and have you be seen every two weeks versus the usual 4-6 week period. We would estimate that you would do at least three or four treatments before doing any aggressive exercise with the shoulder. If you do the above you have a good chance of healing with the Prolotherapy in the hands of a skilled Prolotherapy doctor, such as Dr. Hauser.
