Prolotherapy for Tendinopathy

Prolotherapy and Tendinopathy

Tendinopathy is a common injury, especially for people that make repetitive motions in their jobs, sports or everyday life. The most common tendinopathies occur in knees (jumper’s knee), elbows (tennis elbow), ankles (Achilles tendon pain), shoulders (swimmer’s shoulder) and wrists. These injures include inflammation of the tendon (tendinitis) or tiny tears in the tissues surrounding the tendon (tendinosis). We have seen great success in treating tendinopathy with Prolotherapy and we recently came across a clinical study1 that proves what we have known for years: Prolotherapy is an effective treatment for tendinopathy.

Clinical Review of Prolotherapy for Tendinopathy

A clinical review of Prolotherapy published in the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation highlighted the effectiveness of Prolotherapy in treating painful tendinopathies. The review showed evidence that tendons have increased strength and size after injected with a dextrose-sodium morrhuate Prolotherapy solution. This same solution showed significant healing in participants with tennis elbow resulting in increased grip strength and decreased pain. Achilles tendinopathy and hip adductor tendinopathy were included in the positive results from Prolotherapy. Injured athletes involved in kicking sports were given dextrose Prolotherapy for their groin pain stemming from hip adductor tendinopathy. 83% of the athletes had complete pain resolution and all of the athletes returned to sport after Prolotherapy treatment. Finally, Prolotherapy proved significant healing in people with plantar fasciitis improved measures of pain at rest, pain with activities of daily living and pain after physical activity.
