Prolotherapy helps Dr Hauser on quest to complete 100 mile endurance running race

Dr. Ross Hauser saw his hopes of completing the Umstead 100 mile endurance race in jeopardy two weeks ago, as he had a severe shin splint on his left leg.  During a routine 20 mile run, he noticed a sharp pain at mile 8 on the inner aspect of his left lower leg.  Despite stopping, stretching and changing his running form, the pain persisted.  By the time he completely stopped his workout at 8.5 miles, he was limping.  An hour or so later, as he walked to work, the limp was getting worse. While most folks in his situation would have started popping anti-inflammatory pills, received a cortisone shot, or seen a physical therapist, he went right to Prolotherapy.  That day during the lunch hour, he received Prolotherapy to his left shin. That evening on the walk home, he noticed that he was no longer walking with a limp.  After taking two days off from running, he proceeded to run 5 miles.  The next day he ran 10.  The next day, he ran another 10.  The next day he swam.  Just one week after his shin splint was treated he ran 40 miles in 8 hours and 2 minutes, noticing only the very, very slightest of shin discomfort.  He took the next day off, then ran 8 miles and then completed a 26.2 marathon training run.  This peaked out his training, as he is now in the taper for his 100 mile endurance race.

Dr. Hauser is scheduled to compete in the Umstead 100 in Raleigh North Carolina on March 27, 2010 (www.umstead100.org).  What does he think about Prolotherapy?  “Prolotherapy has helped me get through so many sports injuries.  I am confident that without Prolotherapy I wouldn’t have been able to do the 5 Ironman Triathlons and ultramarathons I have done.  I think Prolotherapy should be the treatment of choice for acute sports injuries.  As far as shin splints, I think Prolotherapy is the best alternative treatment out there!  Can you imagine, the week after getting treated, I ran almost 100 miles!?  Whether or not I finish the 100 mile ultramarathon, time will tell, but at least Prolotherapy helped me complete my training and gave me a chance to do it!”

Prolotherapy is defined as “the rehabilitation of an incompetent structure, such as a ligament or tendon, by the induced proliferation of cells.”  It involves the injection of natural substances into the injured tissue which stimulates the proliferation of cells via growth factors.  Prolotherapy is also known as regenerative injection therapy and involves the injection of such substances as platelet rich plasma (also known as PRP Prolotherapy), dextrose (from corn), sodium morrhuate (cod liver oil) and other natural substances.  Prolotherapy stimulates the normal healing inflammatory reaction that is needed for tissue repair.  Prolotherapy specific stimulates tissues to repair that would not ordinarily repair on their own, such as ligament, tendon, cartilage, labrum and meniscal tissues.  Prolotherapy is effective for such conditions as  labral and meniscal tears, articular cartilage degeneration, tendinosis, ligament laxity or injury, tendon tears, and a host of other soft tissue injuries.  For further information please go to our websites:
