Rugby knee injury in high school athlete

At Caring Medical, we know that Prolotherapy is a great treatment for the young athlete. We get calls and emails from patients and their parents nearly every day in a panic because the athlete is about to be side-lined for an extended period of time and potentially lose a college scholarship...

Because many of them are still in the growth phase of life, their bodies are rapidly regenerating new tissue anyway, so hence, they heal very quickly after Prolotherapy. What is sad to see is a young athlete in the hands of an overly agressive orthopedist who starts the athlete on the RICE road (rest, ice, compression, and elevation), along with a prescription for NSAIDs, cortisone shots, and eventual surgery! We have seen kids who have had surgery for a partial meniscus or ACL tear, for example, end up having surgery and seeing hopes for an athletic scholarship dashed!

Here is an example of this from an email that we just received yesterday:

"My name is CW. I am 16 years old. I have Type 1 diabetes. I have injured my left knee playing sport (rugby). My X-ray showed no broken bones. Earlier today (Tuesday) I had an MRI scan the results of which were not totally clear. The consultant said that I had a ‘slight tear' in my cartilage (meniscal) and I appear to have torn a few fibres in my ACL. The radiographer queried whether much damage had been done to my ACL but the consultant felt that I may have done. My consultant wants to carry out some exploratory surgery to repair my cartilage and assess any damage to my ACL and to see if any reconstruction is necessary, in which case he would perform a second operation.

I am very reluctant to have any surgery on my knee and, in the course of researching any alternatives, I came across prolotherapy and, more specifically, the website - prolonews.com. I would be very grateful for any thoughts you might have about how prolotherapy may help my injury and also I would be very grateful if you could recommend any prolotherapy specialists who practice in or around London, England."

THIS IS ONE SMART 16 YEAR OLD! He has no idea what he may have just saved himself from! As you can imagine, we certainly did recommend that CW get a Prolotherapy evaluation for his sports injury. Dr. Hauser, albeit here in Oak Park, IL, sees patients from all over the globe. I don't know yet if CW will end up seeing us here, but at least he is looking into alternatives to surgery.

CW's playing time will be severely hindered if he ends up getting surgery.

Prolotherapy stimulates the body to repair the painful, injured area(s). We have done studies and published the results showing before and after X-rays documenting cartilage growth in patients receiving Prolotherapy for knee injuries. Click here to read the full article. The point is, Prolotherapy is a much more conservative approach that will not keep the athlete from continuing in his/her sport. Prolotherapy could potentially save the sports career of many young athletes. And don't forget that the athlete will also have to undergo general anesthesia, which is not without its own set of risks. So if you are a young athlete or a parent of one, please consider seeing a Prolotherapy doctor for your sports injury before seeing a surgeon. And please do not let your general practitioner inject you with steroids!
