Young patient with autoimmune disease on Prednisone: Hauser Diet test results reveal alkaline blood pH and pre-diabetic
We recently saw a patient in his 20's who is fighting a rare autoimmune disease who came to us facing the prospect long term steroid use just to control his disease. Samuel came to see us at Caring Medical to see if we could help him get back on track with his overall health, as he had heard good things about Hauser Diet Typing.
Samuel's Diet Typing results revealed that he had alkaline (high) blood pH and high blood sugars. We recommended the Hauser Otter Diet (higher protein, lower carbohydrate), which you may think is odd since typically these patients have acidic blood. However, due to his chronic use of steroids and chronically high blood sugars, his blood pH became alkaline. Dr. Hauser has seen this happen in patients on Prednisone, but it is not necessarily always the case with steroids, but sometimes occurs.
Just 50grams of carbohydrates (from the fruit drink the patient drank at the time of testing) caused his blood sugars to increase to 172 mg/dL. Imagine if he ate a full meal of carbohydrates. His blood sugars could easily increase to the 250 range. In essence, Samuel was developing diabetes and we recommended that he check a glycosylated hemoglobin level which looks at the long term glucose levels in the blood.
Samuel really didn't realize the potential determinal effects of taking long term Prednisone, such as osteoporosis, joint degeneration, heart disease, and diabetes. The results of his Hauser Diet Typing revealed that his long term Prednisone use was taking its toll on his body. We also ran a food allergy/sensitivity test on Samuel which revealed that he was mounting an immune response against wheat, eggs, dairy, beef, and corn. When a patient is fighting an autoimmune disease, it is vitally important that he eliminate all other sources of stress on the body, so these foods needed to be eliminated from his diet.
If you are facing long term steroid use - either orally from an autoimmune disease, or injected due to long-term injury, please realize, they are not without potential consequences. If you are interested in getting off of them, please give us a call for an appointment today at 708-848-7789.
