Prolotherapy - Get back in the Game

Prolotherapy is a medical procedure that chronic and acute pain patients, as well as athletes with sports injuries, turn to as an alternative to surgery, arthroscopy, cortisone shots, non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, and/or chronic use of narcotic pain medications. In most cases, anti-inflammatory medications and more drastic measures like arthroscopic surgery, joint replacements, cortisone shots, and other therapies may not help, and often halt the healing process. Prolotherapy stimulates the body to repair the painful injured area(s) when the body’s natural healing process is not able to do the job on its own. Prolotherapy is a safe, affordable option that allows the patient to keep working and/or training, because it works synergistically with movement and activity. Unlike steroid and surgical treatments which are known for long term degenerative effects, Prolotherapy is a regenerative treatment.

Chicago Prolotherapy

Ross A. Hauser, MD and Danielle R. Steilen, MMS, PA-C,
the two Prolotherapy practitioners at Caring Medical.

Caring Medical and Rehabilitation Services is a full time Prolotherapy center. This is our specialty! Comprehensive Prolotherapy by a skilled practitioner can address the root cause of your problem and get you back to sports, work, and enjoying a full life again. This is why our Prolotherapists, Dr. Ross Hauser and Danielle Steilen, MMS, PA-C, see patients from all over the greater Chicago area, each of the 50 states, and even internationally. Our Prolotherapy practitioners treat everything from the simplest of cases of a sprained ankle in a young athlete to the most difficult cases of chronic, all-over body pain and degenerative arthritis. We will customize the treatment to best meet the needs of your particular injury/condition. In addition to Comprehensive Prolotherapy, we will outline a rehabilitation program designed to promote optimal healing. We want to help you maximize your Prolotherapy potential!

Prolotherapy Overview

The basic mechanism of Prolotherapy is simple. What most people are surprised to find out is that the body heals by inflammation. In other words, we need inflammation to heal our bodies. It works because it actually stimulates an inflammatory reaction in the body. We inject Prolotherapy solutions into the affected ligaments, tendons, and/or joints, which leads to local inflammation in the injected area. The localized inflammation triggers a wound healing cascade, resulting in the deposition of new collagen, the material that ligaments and tendons are made of. New collagen shrinks as it matures. The shrinking collagen tightens the ligament that was injected and makes it stronger. Prolotherapy is very effective at eliminating pain and sports injuries that are a result of ligament and/or tendon weakness.

The effectiveness of Prolotherapy does depend upon the technique of the individual Prolotherapist, as well as the overall health and dedication of the patient to encourage the healing process after each treatment. We use Hackett-Hemwall dextrose Prolotherapy here at Caring Medical as the base for all regenerative injection treatments. One of the most important aspects of Prolotherapy is injecting enough of the solution into the injured and weakened areas. The Hackett-Hemwall technique does this, as it more aggressively targets the many points of pain and weakness in any given joint. For some of the more severe cases we see here, Cellular Prolotherapy solutions may be added to the treatment. This can include Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) or Stem Cell Therapy (from a person’s own fat or bone marrow). When this type of comprehensive approach is taken with Prolotherapy, the likelihood of success is excellent.
