One question that we receive a lot here at Caring Medical either by phone or via email is: What exactly is this Hauser Diet and this Hauser Diet Typing process that you do over there at Caring Medical? It is a laboratory testing process that Dr. Hauser and myself, being a registered dietitian, actually developed here at Caring Medical because we found that the traditional way of looking at diet didn’t really work for most people. When I worked as a registered dietitian in a hospital, I found that the things that I learned in college and in grad school were not really applicable to the average patient. What I found out through some research and investigating our patient population is that each person needs to have their own individualized approach to their own diet. In other words, their physiology is different so, a patent could have cardiovascular disease and their neighbor could also have cardiovascular disease but they could each be needing to follow a different diet. We developed a process that we call Diet Typing to figure out what diet is needed for those individual people.

The process involves taking some blood so; you are actually going to know for certain what your body needs as far as how much protein, how much carbohydrate, and how much fat you need to eat. The first test is called blood pH and pH is something that some people might think of when you test a swimming pool, whether it is acid or alkaline. First we are looking at blood pH then we are look at a glucose tolerance test where we have the patient take a glucose drink and then we test their blood sugar over a period of ninety minutes. Along with that, we will measure insulin because we want to see how the body responds to the glucose as well as how much insulin the body produces. We also a check hemoglobin A1C level which helps us determine how their blood sugar has been over the past three months. That is the basic Diet Typing package in and of itself, but sometimes patients are coming in with other complaint, so, one of the other more common tests that we do is a food sensitivity panel. You might ask “well why would you do that?” Many of our patients have allergic symptoms or have a problem with certain types of foods that they may not even know about. The top foods that we typically find are things like casein, which is in milk, eggs, and wheat. We put all of that information together, along with the questionnaire that the patients fill out where we ask how they feel when they eat certain foods, put it all together and we can come up with a patients actual Hauser Diet Type.
