Dr. Ross Hauser of Caring Medical and Rehabilitation Services in Oak Park, Illinois answers the question of how many and how often someone might require a Prolotherapy treatment.
How often do patients get treated with Prolotherapy?
The typical person gets treated about once a month. When you sprain your ankle, tear a tendon, injure a tendon, and stretch a tendon, the body heals that tendonor ligamentover a four to six week period. So the normal inflammatory healing reaction in the body occurs over a four to six week period. So we chose to give a good, aggressive, thorough, Prolotherapy treatment and let the body heal over a four to six week period. Now there are definitely situations where it is prudent to treat the person once a week once every two week or there even are times where we should treat the person less frequently. But the average person that we see gets Prolotherapy preformed on them every four to six weeks and most people come in every four or five weeks that means about once a month.
How many treatment sessions of Prolotherapy injections does the average person need?
We found over the years, being a Prolotherapy doctor since 1993 and seeing thousands and thousands of clients, plus the experience of Doctor Hemwall over forty years, the average person needs three to six visits to get them over their chronic pain. If somebody comes in with acute pain, such as a sports injury or an injury that just recently happened, typically one to three visits Prolotherapy injection visits are needed. But for the average person that comes in, it is three to six visits. Now if somebody has bone on bone arthritis or a really degenerated joint, that is likely going to take a year worth of care. This means that they are going to be seen once a month for twelve months. I can say that when someone comes in to see me in Oak Park at Caring Medical, I generally tell them on the first visit about the number of Prolotherapy sessions that they should expect to get them to their goals. In other words, on the first visit we would discus what are their goals are with Prolotherapy: is it just to get out of pain, is it to get back to running, is it to do a marathon, is it just to do shopping. Depending on their goals and type of sports injury or state of chronic pain, typically I can tell them about the number of sessions they will likely need of Prolotherapy.
