Prolotherapy versus Physical Therapy

Prolotherapy versus Physical Therapy

We are often asked about Prolotherapy versus Physical Therapy for an injury. In this video, Dr. Hauser gives a brief overview of when to favor one over another.

Often I get asked the question, when should a person do Prolotherapy versus physical therapy. I’m trained as a physical medicine and rehab doctor, so I’m a Board Certified Physiatrist and often a lot of our training relates to strokes. If somebody had a stroke, and they need to learn to walk again, they should go see a Physical Therapist. There’s no doubt that physical therapy helps a lot of conditions. But, you’ve got to realize, in the Chicago area a physical therapy session can easily cost $250-$300. If you’re an athlete and you strain you’re knee and you get 10 sessions of Physical Therapy, that’s costing somebody, and a lot of times it’s the patient, even with co-pays, a lot of money. Is that strained knee worth $2500-$3000 of expense? Often if a person would get Prolotherapy right away, they would only need one visit. One visit for Prolotherapy for the knee in the Chicagoland area is about $375. Well, that’s a lot less expensive.

I’m a very big fan of physical therapists. I have friends who are physical therapists. I, myself, have benefited from physical therapy, but it isn’t just that with every injury you should go get physical therapy. There are certain injuries, especially if an injury is recurring, because there is some muscle imbalance, or this, or that. For instance, I had a stress fracture on my left tibia, so my left leg got weaker. I can either strengthen that left leg myself or I can do it with the help of a physical therapist, to get specific exercises. That is great, but I think we all should be some what cost conscious and often Prolotherapy is actually less expensive. Prolotherapy gets athletes back to their sport, in my experience, much quicker than the traditional physical therapy. And athletes? Man, if they want to get back in the game quickly, I would really encourage an athlete, anyone with pain, to get Prolotherapy. It’ll get you back, in my experience, the quickest of all the methods.
