The Bear Diet Type: what does that mean?

The Bear Diet Type: what does that mean?

Marion Hauser, MS, RD and Nicole Baird, CHFP, co-authors of The Hauser Diet: A Fresh Look at Healthy Living, discuss an email they received asking for more information about the Bear Diet Type.

Video Transcription

We are back at Hauser Diet central answering more of your emails at hauserdiet.com. A common one that we get that we wanted to talk about today, it actually came in from New York and it was a women named Lois who wrote: “I went on hauserdiet.com and took your quiz. I am a Bear and I have been eating like this basically my whole life, but I have never been able to loose weight so I am confused.” Well she writes here that it appears that the Bear can eat pretty much anything so that really is not helping me.

One of the things that we find and this is very common people will take the quiz and one point I want to make about the quiz is that you need to think about how you feel when you eat. Not whether or not you like pasta or whether you like steak or like eating breakfast, or whether you drink coffee because you like it. That is not what we are trying to get at with this quiz. We are trying to see if you know how you feel when you eat food. Does it give you energy? Do you feel bloated? Do you feel constipated? Etc…

Aside from that if you feel like you entered the quiz correctly it only has a certain level of coloration. The best thing for Louis to do is actually come in and get Diet Typing so that she knows for sure that is her Diet Type. If you have tried it, you have done a lot of things already then it may not be your correct Diet Type. That is point number one. If what you are doing is not working in your favor then chances are you are not eating right for your Diet Type. So, you need to take it to the next level and actually really find out, get the real scoop. I wouldn’t want to totally change the way I am eating if I didn’t know for sure that that is the way I should change. Lois has been saying that she has been following it and that is has not been working for her. For me I would really want to know for sure. You can get your blood pH checked, the glucose tolerance test, and the food allergies test which could also contribute  to additional weight gain so, put it all together and a make sure that that is for sure your diet type.

Another point is that if you are a Bear so, you have tested out and you are a Bear some of the things we discuss in the Bear chapter of the Hauser Diet Book are the pitfalls. There is a whole section on tips for Bears loosing weight, danger zones, and all these things in the Bear chapter. The Bear diet is not extreme. It is more of a balanced diet of carbs, proteins, and fats. We do get those kinds of questions a lot. We do talk about portions. You will see this in chapter five of the Hauser Diet Book we do some protein, some fat, some carbohydrates in each meal. But we often see the Bears still overeat on sweets, still overeat on carbohydrates and they still seem to be lacking sometimes in protein and vegetables. They may save those for last and seem to be choosing too many fatty foods and too many carbohydrates when they really should be opting for balanced meals.

It seems like what the Bears are typically following is the typical American diet which really does not fit into any of these five Hauser Diets. It’s a high carbohydrate, high fat diet. Its pizza and mac and cheese all those things all the time and they just are really not getting a good amount of proteins and vegetables, and a little bit of fruit, like they should.

Some Bears are saying “well no, I don’t eat like that so what is my problem?” The very common pitfall we see with Bears is they are just not excersing enough to burn off what they are eating. They tend to overeat, their portions are too big. Bears, we outright say it in the Bear chapter that some Bears are lazy. I am a Bear. I feel that guilt sometimes when I don’t have it in me to want to workout but, I know I ate plenty today. I really just need to get my butt in gear. That’s the really good thing about this book too is because in the exercise chapter that is in the book.

This book is a lot about food but it is also about how to get your rear end off of the couch. It is a lifestyle. It is not just “eat these certain foods and your are going to be healthy for the rest of your life.” You might start with diet. Diet might be the first thing that starts getting you some energy and getting you clues of why you were feeling so sick and bloated and why you cant lose weight. That will be the first clue into your health, but afterward you will start feeling more energy you need to lose that in order to really start exercising ad making yourself a healthier person. It strengthens your immune system, prevents disease, and gets you going. Hopefully this answers Lois’s question and a lot of the other Bears that asked the same question out there, after taking the quiz on hauserdiet.com. We do invite you to take those quizzes and keep those emails coming in.
