What is a ligament?

What is a ligament?

Prolotherapy is an injection technique that stimulates the body to repair the painful area. Prolotherapy is used to repair damaged ligaments, tendons, and degenerated cartilage. Ross Hauser, MD is a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation specialist and Prolotherapy physician at Caring Medical in Chicago land. In this video, Dr. Hauser explains what a ligament is, and the importance of treating ligament injuries to prevent future osteoarthritis.

What is a ligament? A ligament is a structure that connects one bone to another bone. It is made from collagen, and you can see from this example that this is just a lower back model and these are the sacroiliac ligaments (points to model). These ligaments connect the iliac crest to the sacrum. These ligaments stabilize this joint, which is the sacroiliac joint. The whole musculoskeletal structure is held together by ligaments. Ligaments are basically the nuts and bolts of the musculoskeletal system.

When a ligament is injured the joint becomes unstable there becomes excessive motion. When there is excessive motion of a joint, the body is going to recruit muscles and the muscles go into spasm. If the muscles spasm, most likely you have an underlying ligament injury. If you don’t get that ligament treated you are going to get aggressive osteoarthritis sooner rather than later, because something is going to stabilize that joint. The body is not going to let you indefinitely have an unstable joint. If you have a joint instability you can’t do certain things. It accelerates the aging process. The body will stabilize the joint by degenerating that joint and causing bone spurs.

If you don’t want to get osteoarthritis of a joint or if you have osteoarthritis and you don’t want it to become worse then you got to stabilize the joint. The best treatment to stabilize the joint by repairing the ligaments is Prolotherapy.
