Marion Hauser, MS, RD and Nicole Baird, CHFP, discuss how blood pH can be used to determine what foods are best for an individual’s healthy diet plan.
Hi, welcome back to Hauser Diet central where we are answering some of your questions and comments and suggestions from hauserdiet.com. We really enjoy getting your comments and questions from our email address and you can go on hauserdiet.com anytime and look up recipes and more information about one of the five Hauser Diets, ask us a question, or share a recipe. You have an interesting one here that we just received the other day. Yeah, I thought it would be a good one to share with out audience. Doug from Utah writes “I just to your diet quiz at hauderdiet.com. I typed out to be an Otter I primarily eat vegetarian as it keeps my urine alkaline. I done this for five years because I struggle with fatigue. It seems the way you discuss pH on hauserdiet.com is different from what I have read. Can you explain because I am hesitant to start eating too much meat?”
I think a lot of people when they read that about the Otter Diet either in the book or online they may be a little hesitant and be like “Wow that is a lot of meat. That’s a lot of fat.” and specifically some people that have been doing urine or saliva pH testing. That is pretty common. Interesting enough, people in the natural health field do test their urinary pH. I think that is a key point that we need to make related to the Hauser Diet is that we are actually testing your blood pH. If you want to read more about the pH section I would encourage everybody to get the book because in this chapter we are talking about venous blood pH, acid or alkaline. That is really what we are looking at because typically the urinary pH is opposite of the blood pH. So one of the points that you need to consider here is that we are talking about your blood. That is not something you can do at home. You will actually have to go into the doctor’s office and have it tested. What we do find is that people who have an acidic blood pH have a pH that is lower than normal and people with alkaline blood pH have a higher blood pH than normal.
We really encourage people to have optimal health, you need to in the normal range, and you need to have a balanced pH level. That window is very small as you can see from that graph there. Tiny changes can make you feel less energy, fatigued, hypoglycemic, sort of that mental fog, you can feel hot, you can feel cold, lots of symptoms can be related to your blood pH. The question that Doug proposed brings us to the fact that urinary pH is somewhat different. I would encourage Doug to kind of do away with that because it really is not helping him. It is somewhat the opposite of what he needs to be doing. He really needs to be eating a higher protein fat diet from the Otter Diet quiz. If he really wanted to know he would come in and get tested. But if the quiz is accurate and that truly is his Diet Type, then he needs to be eating more protein and fat because he most likely has acidic blood right now. The things that he is eating which would be probably vegetables, fruits, and grains those are actually acidifying his blood so he is actually doing things to make himself worse. That could be why he is not successful and why he feels tired.
The take home point for our listeners would be if you feel fatigued and have been following a vegetarian diet and you type out to be an Otter or if you have any incline that what your are doing may not be helping you feel better, come in, get diet typing, find out what diet you truly are and don’t be afraid to start incorporating more meats and things because we are looking at blood pH. We are not even taking into consideration urinary pH. Come in get the diet typing done, find out if you are truly and Otter. Otters need to eat more meat and fat. They can read more about that diet too in the book. Until next time, see you later.
