Ross Hauser, MD is a full time Prolotherapy physician, specializing in tough cases of sports injuries and chronic pain since 1993. In this video, Dr. Hauser discusses the two kinds of Bone Marrow Prolotherapy or he performs.
In the office we do two types of Bone Marrow Prolotherapy or Stem Cell Prolotherapy. The one is called direct Bone Marrow aspiration Prolotherapy. That is when get the bone marrow out and the bone marrow is directly aspirated into the joint that is degenerated, like the knee joint. We can concentrate the bone marrow cells, so that is called Bone Marrow aspirate concentrate Prolotherapy. Specifically with that we are actually taking out more of the bone marrow then we are combining it with Platelet Rich Plasma and then we are spinning all that solution down to get a very concentrated amount of bone marrow cells and other cells that aid healing. That is more concentrated, so at least theoretically, that would aid healing even more than Bone Marrow aspirate Prolotherapy. But I must admit that those two have not been directly tested against one another. It might be that Bone Marrow aspiration works just as well. The only downside perhaps is that because there is a filtering process that the cost is greater with Bone Marrow aspirate concentrate besides that there is not really a downside to it.
